House Clearance in Darlington – Severe Cluttered Bungalow with Loft and Garage

We cover all areas of Darlington and County Durham including Haughton-le-Skerne, Cockerton, Hurworth, Middleton St George, and the surrounding villages.

We were recently contacted by a man from York whose elderly mother had passed away, leaving behind a two-bedroom semi-detached bungalow in Darlington. The property hadn’t been cleared or updated in decades and was completely filled with clutter from front to back, including an inaccessible loft and an overflowing detached garage.

The client had originally considered hiring a skip and doing the work himself over a weekend, but after one initial visit and realising the scale of the job — not to mention the presence of damp, mould, and rodent activity — he reached out to us for help. We arranged a fixed-fee clearance and booked the job for the following Thursday.

Arrival and initial walkthrough:

Our Darlington house clearance team of three arrived at 9 AM and were met by the client, who handed over the keys and asked us to look out for a few specific items: his mother’s engagement ring, some family photos, and any documents related to the house or her pension.

The property was in poor condition, with most surfaces buried under bags, boxes, and furniture. We worked room by room, starting from the rear of the house and moving forward.

  • Living Room: Packed with outdated furniture, boxes of newspapers, dozens of framed prints, and three broken televisions. We also found several unopened letters and documents behind a display cabinet.

  • Kitchen: Full of old food, rusted utensils, and a fridge-freezer that had defrosted during a power cut. A broken washing machine and gas cooker were also removed.

  • Bedrooms: Wardrobes full of clothing, drawers packed with old receipts, diaries, and costume jewellery. One box contained dozens of greeting cards going back to the 1970s.

  • Bathroom: Difficult to access initially — clutter had been stacked up to the doorway.

Loft and garage:

  • The loft was accessed via an old step ladder and was tightly packed with holiday decorations, scrapbooks, and plastic tubs of sewing supplies.

  • The garage was a challenge — filled with boxes, broken tools, a rusted bicycle, and old paint cans. We discovered rodent nests inside some of the boxes, so extra care and PPE were used throughout.

Important items recovered and returned to the client:

Despite the mess, we recovered and handed over several important and sentimental items, including:

  • A 9ct gold engagement ring in a small velvet pouch

  • Three family photo albums and two framed portraits

  • A set of WWII service medals in a metal biscuit tin

  • Pension letters, banking paperwork, and the original property deed

  • A carved oak jewellery box with silver earrings and a gold locket

  • A collection of postcards and holiday photos from the 1950s and ‘60s

The client was especially touched by the return of the ring and the holiday photos, which brought back fond memories.

Job completion:

The full clearance — including loft, garage, garden waste, carpets, and white goods — took just under 7 hours and required three van loads. Two van loads were taken to a licensed recycling centre and one to a local Darlington charity.

Client testimonial:

“I can’t thank the team enough. They arrived on time, worked quickly, and were incredibly respectful throughout. I was dreading this job, but they handled it professionally and even found my mum’s engagement ring, which I thought was gone forever. Brilliant service from start to finish.”
