Contracted this company to clear the flat of my deceased mother. Two young guys cleared EVERYTHING out of the rented property, including furniture, carpets, ornaments, white goods and food/household products, politely, efficiently, and respectfully. Excellent service.

The guys from Northern House Clearance have just cleared a house for me in Scotland. The house was packed not only with a lifetimes worth of memories, but all the clutter that goes with it. Within 2 days it was emptied down to the floorboards. A great job from a good team of lads. Highly recommended.

An excellent 5 star service. Firstly the compassion shown due to the circumstances which resulted in having to use their services, not just on the phone but by the team who arrived, on time, to perform the job. Above all a friendly attitude goes a long way in stressful times. Professional from the start to the end of the day and due to the amount of clutter a second day was needed. I could not believe how much was cleared in just one day, it was as if the clutter had it's own clutter to clear. Hope that I never need to use them again, but if I have to clear another property they will be the only people that I call. Highly recommend them. G.Hatton. Cheshire.

The team arrived bang on time and began work immediately. They continued for five solid days and completed the entire clearance of my late uncles house, which was a case of extreme hoarding over many decades. They even removed carpets, curtains and swept up so the house was ready for sale. They were exeptionally hard working, polite and charged a reasonable price for this incredibly difficult job. Terrific service, absolutely recommended.

How to Reduce Waste and Recycle During a House Clearance

A house clearance can generate a significant amount of waste, but with careful planning, many items can be reused or recycled instead of ending up in landfill. Whether you’re clearing out a home after a bereavement, downsizing, or preparing a property for sale, taking an environmentally responsible approach can make a big difference.

Why Reducing Waste Matters

Minimizing waste during a house clearance helps to:

  • Reduce landfill waste – Less rubbish means less environmental harm.
  • Support recycling efforts – Many materials can be repurposed.
  • Help others – Donating usable items benefits those in need.
  • Save money – Reducing waste can lower disposal costs.

Practical Steps to Reduce Waste and Recycle

1. Sort Items Into Categories

Before the house clearance begins, divide items into different categories:

  • Keep – Essential or sentimental items.
  • Sell – Valuable pieces that can be sold.
  • Donate – Items in good condition that can help charities.
  • Recycle – Materials that can be processed into new products.
  • Dispose – Only what cannot be reused or recycled.

2. Donate Usable Items

Many charities accept second-hand furniture, clothing, and household goods. Some offer free collection services for large items. Check with local organizations to see what they accept.

Commonly accepted items include:

  • Furniture (with fire safety labels)
  • Electrical appliances (working condition)
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Kitchenware and household goods
  • Books and toys

3. Sell or Give Away Items

If you have valuable or functional items, consider selling them through:

  • Online marketplaces
  • Antique or second-hand dealers
  • Local car boot sales

Alternatively, you can offer free items to others through community groups or donation networks.

4. Recycle Where Possible

Recycling centers accept many household items, including:

  • Metal – Old appliances, cookware, and scrap metal.
  • Wood – Unwanted furniture, doors, and shelving.
  • Paper and cardboard – Books, magazines, and packaging.
  • Glass – Bottles, mirrors, and windows.
  • Electronics – Computers, televisions, and mobile phones.

Check with your local recycling center to understand their policies.

5. Dispose of Hazardous Waste Properly

Some household items require special disposal methods:

  • Paints, chemicals, and solvents
  • Gas canisters and batteries
  • Asbestos-containing materials
  • Broken electricals that cannot be repaired

Many councils offer hazardous waste collection or designated drop-off points.

6. Repurpose or Upcycle Items

Some furniture and household goods can be repurposed instead of thrown away. Examples include:

  • Turning old wooden furniture into shelves or storage units.
  • Using fabric from old clothing for crafts or upholstery.
  • Repurposing jars and containers for storage.

7. Use an Eco-Friendly House Clearance Service

Choosing a house clearance company that prioritizes recycling and donations can make the process more sustainable. A reputable service will sort items responsibly and minimize landfill waste.

Final Thoughts

Reducing waste during a house clearance benefits both the environment and the community. By sorting, donating, selling, and recycling items, you can ensure that as little as possible goes to waste. With a little planning, a house clearance can be both efficient and environmentally friendly.
