When you stroll through the narrow cobbled streets of the quiet old burgh of Culross, it is not difficult to imagine yourself back in the 16th or 17th century. Almost the entire village is a living museum, as all the pan-tiled houses with their crow-step gables have been carefully restored. But there’s a lot more to Culross than a group of picturesque houses. Today, it is a lively community where the burgher’s lives weave a web from past to present, keeping the buildings of Culross more alive than any museum could. It is the perfect venue for musical and artistic events.

The Mote Hill (Mount) noted off Ryle Elliot’s 1954 notes, is thought to be one of the oldest camp sites in south Berwickshire and may date back as far as the Iron Age. In Roman times it was obviously a fairly large camp although not quite so large as a similar one at Belchester.

The north eastern corner of Aberdeenshire is an area of deep traditions with its own heritage and culture, shaped by the fishermen and farmers who for centuries derived their livelihoods from the sea and the land.

Even in the concrete jungle wood is all around us, but usually not in the form of trees. Although it is very old fashioned material, it has become more popular in recent years and in the 21st century is considered to be a very low energy ecological resource compared to other traditional construction materials such as brick. It is versatile, relatively lightweight, yet very strong and easy to work using hand tools. This makes it a very useful DIY material.

This is an outline of a basic method of laying out a site prior to undertaking any small building work. It is aimed specifically at preparation for concrete strip foundations for block or brickwork, but it would also apply if you were using timber, for example. Besides involving concrete, this includes the other three banes of life; making accurate measurements, levelling and worst of all, digging!

Dealing with cement is something that I avoided for as long as I possibly could. If something interests me I can’t get it done quick enough, but otherwise I avoid doing it ever, if possible. What is it that I don’t like? Well having thought long and hard about it, it’s all down to the fact that it is dirty and wet! It doesn’t do much for keeping your hands as soft as your face, either.

Assuming you have a suitable concrete surface or foundation and guidelines, you can get straight on with the bricks and mortar. The following information is based on the construction of a wall with a thickness of one brick width.

Timber framing has become more common, but bricks haven’t lost their popularity as a building material. There are a multitude of brick types. Most often they are made of clay, but also calcium silicate, and of course, plastic if you include lego. The size of a standard brick is approximately 220x105x65mm.
